In her subtle surrealism paintings of figures in otherworldly scenes, Lavennz Ooi is celebrating life by narrating the essence of living through work of art. Born in 1986 in Malaysia, Ooi devoted her career from engineering to professional artist after she relocated to Maine in her late 20s. Inspired by these dramatic life changes, she aims to use her works to evoke thoughts on the purpose of life and encouraging viewers live their life to the fullest potential. By juxtaposing disparate elements into one composition, such as fiercely fire and tranquil water  or iceberg and green grass, she is telling the stories of survival, sense of life, aspiration and true happiness.

Influenced by her one-year study under artist, Sadie Valeri, Ooi uses limited color palette to create her works with indirect painting technique, overlapping layers by layers of thin oil paints to bring out the details gradually while maintaining the surface smooth. Her works have appeared in various group shows, in Los Angeles and Vancouver, as well as the finalist of 2016 Art Kudos International Juried Exhibition. She is currently living and building her new body of works in South Portland, Maine.
